Welcome to Debrecen, Hungary!

With these pages we would like to help you, guide you how to find us, how to use our city’s public transportation and everything that might ease your first move in Hungary.

Getting to University of Debrecen, MHSC

From your country you arrive to Budapest - Ferihegy by airplane (probably). There are 2 terminals, Terminal 1 (cheap flights) and Terminal 2. At Terminal 1, there is a train stop. You can buy your train ticket in the airport building (Treminal 1), and by 5 minutes walk, you can reach the train stop, then catch the right train and come to Debrecen, which takes you about 2.30 hours.
If you arrive at Terminal 2, the busline 200 goes every 15-20 minutes to Terminal 1.

You will find the timetable about the trains on www.elvira.hu in English as well.

Transportation, location:

The University is located in the middle of the Great Forrest /the most beautiful area of Debrecen/. There are several ways of reaching the University or the English Program (nr 7 on the map of Debrecen). In Debrecen there is one tram line, so it is the easiest way. You get on the tram anywhere and sooner or later you will reach the University’s Main Entrance. You cannot get lost in Debrecen.

You can also go to the University by bus (buses no. 10, 12, 13, 24 or 26). You can find a board in every bus stop where you can get information about the time the buses leave. The best and the most comfortable way to use public transportation is to buy a pass (season ticket). You can buy it at the Railway Station (at the end of the tram line). You will need your student card, so that it will be cheaper.
Every time you use public transportation you should have your pass with you or at least a ticket (it is valid for one way only) that you can get from the driver or from markets and stores. (Mind you to write your student card number on your pass!)
Certainly the most comfortable way is to travel by taxi, but it is much more expensive than a ticket or a pass.

A PLACE FOR THE FIRST FEW DAYS
Finding a room in Debrecen is the first big problem faced by Erasmus students upon their arrival. There are lots of rooms for rent, but they pose two basic problems. First, you actually have to find one. Second, you have to determine whether it is truly a good deal or not. In this context, hotels represent a good solution, for the first few days at least.
Before the start of the 1st semester, you can stay for the first days (max a week) in the III. Dormitory of the Medical Faculty (Debrecen, Moricz Zs. krt. 22.) Remember that you have to reserve a room 5 days before arriving otherwise a place cannot be guaranteed. (Price: ca. 4000 HUF/night/person).

You can use your own health insurance or you can buy the insurance offered by the University. You cannot register without these papers!
If you wish to use your own health insurance, then you need to obtain a certificate from your insurance company certifying that:
  • You are insured at the given company
  • Your insurance is valid for Hungary,
  • What costs are covered by the insurance in Hungary.

All students in Hungary have a student card. With it students can travel cheaper in Hungary, and they also get discount in some restaurants, stores and cinemas.

Hungarian Language Course

Every year, a pre-term Intensive Hungarian Language Course is held before the start of the semester (usually the course starts after 20th August), the course lasts 2 weeks, every day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please consider than you cannot miss more than 10% of classes. Students arriving in Debrecen after August 25 WILL NOT BE ABLE to attend the Intensive Hungarian Language Course. In the first year elective Hungarian during the semester can be taken up only after finishing the intensive summer course in Hungarian.
